"Probably the smallest surf life saving club in the world!"
There has been lifesavers presence on the beach since the 1970's. A newspaper article from the Glamorgan Gazette described how public funding was raised to assure a walking patrol was provide to cover from neighbouring Pink Bay to Morfa. It was not until 2004 that Kenfig Sands Surf Lifesaving Club (KSSLSC) was officially formed providing lifeguard cover on what is a remote and inaccessible stretch of secluded sands, only accessible through the large sand dune network and designated nature reserve.
The club patrols during the summer months on weekends and bank holidays to provide information and first aid for this difficult to reach area. The beach runs from Sker Point to the River Afon Cynffig, however patrols are limited to the eastern end to the beach. Hidden by the Kenfig Nature Reserve, the club has evolved over the years and now contributes to lifeguard training and assessment for both beach lifeguards and junior lifesavers.
The club keeps strong links with neighbouring surf lifesaving clubs, other local charities and the local community. As part of the Surf Life Saving Association of Wales and the Royal Lifesaving Society of the UK, the club operates as a charitable organisation from small club house that sits on Sker Point and run by a dedicated team of volunteers. We are a small but very welcoming club and actively encourage people from all walks of life to get involved with lifesaving.
