The Beach
There are five rocky points that line the Porthcawl coastline, starting with Newton Point in the East, Rhych Point, Porthcawl Point, Hutchwns Point and ending with Sker Point West of Rest Bay. From Sker Point, the network sand dunes are home to a variety of rare and endangered species of plants and animals making up part of the largest active sand dune system in Europe. The long stretch of beach is also popular with horse riders. Due to the beach sitting on the edge of Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), there are limited facilities, however the Nature Reserve Visitors Centre offers some refreshments, toilets, disabled facilities.
As the most westerly beach in Porthcawl, only accessible by walking from Rest Bay or Kenfig National Nature Reserve, Sker point and Kenfig Sands is a lovely flat stretch of sandy beach and one of quietest spots around. Our remote location provides a element of danger, especially if surfing or swimming on your own. The beach break works on various wave directions and a westerly swell and is complimented with a northerly wind. Hazards can include jellyfish, strong cross shore drift, fast moving tide but the walk to the beach is worth it. It is important to check the weather and tide times before you visit and plan accordingly. Always check the local weather forecast and tide times before you set out.
During the Summer months most other beaches around Bridgend, Swansea and the Vale of Glamorgan have dog banned on their most popular beaches.
The ban usually starts on the 1st of May until the 30th of September. Kenfig Sands is one of the few beaches around that is dog friendly,
mostly due to the length of the beach and size of the sand dunes. We ask owners to be respectful of others.
